As part of its vision to realize a world without breast cancer, Susan G. Komen for the Cure(R) is encouraging people to show their true colors by participating in Passionately Pink for the Cure(R), a simple national fundraising program that inspires breast cancer advocacy and honors those affected by the disease. Registration for the 2008 program is now open at the newly redesigned http://www.passionatelypink.org/.
Passionately Pink for the Cure is a grassroots program in which companies, organizations, social groups or individuals pick a day to wear pink, and each group member donates $5 or more to Komen for the Cure. Groups can select any day or days from May through October to "go Passionately Pink" and show their colors.
Participants are encouraged not only to wear pink, but also to get creative and make the day fun and educational. Groups can organize theme days or host events in honor of breast cancer survivors. After registering at http://www.passionatelypink.org/, groups will receive a free participation kit that includes ideas and promotional materials for their Passionately Pink day. Groups host their own events and then send the funds raised back to Komen.
"Nearly everyone knows someone who has been affected by breast cancer. Going Passionately Pink is an easy and fun way to show your support for ending the disease," said breast cancer survivor Hala Moddelmog, president and CEO of Komen for the Cure. "Passionately Pink for the Cure participants play a critical role in helping us create a world without breast cancer-and they do it in style!"
Last year, more than 8,000 businesses, schools, places of worship and social organizations went Passionately Pink for the Cure and generated nearly $4 million which has been invested in breast cancer research and community-based breast health programs. This year, Komen hopes to raise $4.5 million through the program to support its promise to save lives and end breast cancer forever.
Seventy-five percent of donations received through Passionately Pink for the Cure will go toward research to find the cures for breast cancer, and the remaining 25 percent will support breast cancer education, screening and treatment programs at the local level.
Actresses Cynthia Nixon and Gabrielle Union have recently joined Susan G. Komen for the Cure as ambassadors in the breast cancer movement. Both women will go Passionately Pink alongside thousands who plan to participate this year.
"As the daughter of a breast cancer survivor and a breast cancer survivor myself, I have experienced the disease from both sides. I will do whatever it takes to end this disease," Cynthia Nixon said. "Going Passionately Pink is just one way I am playing my part in ending breast cancer."
