Disease Management journal changes name and expands focus to population health management

26.08.2008 at 08:03 - Category: Health News Today

New Rochelle, NY, August 25, 2008—Reflecting the expanding scope of chronic disease care and the impact of economic, social, cultural, and environmental factors on health care systems and practices, DMAA: The Care Continuum Alliance and publisher Mary Ann Liebert Inc. have renamed the peer-reviewed journal of DMAA Population Health Management.

The new name of the journal (formerly Disease Management) begins with the August 2008 issue (Volume 11, Number 4). With the new name comes a broadened approach to exploring the changes in strategy, implementation and policy needed to improve overall health care and quality of life. To mark the name change, DMAA and Mary Ann Liebert are making the entire August issue available at no charge online at www.liebertpub.com/pop

Although disease management will continue to be a critical component of population health improvement, it represents only one tool required for improving health care quality, access, and outcomes at the population level. Other elements include resource management, clinical guidelines, compliance strategies, information technology, and health economics. In addition to these topics, original research papers published in Population Health Management will focus on outcomes assessment, clinical process reengineering, provider incentives, quality, and return on investment.

"Population health focuses on the distribution of health outcomes within a population as well as the determinants that affect this distribution (e.g., ethnicity, medical care, environment, and public health policy)," says Journal Editor-in-Chief David B. Nash, MD, MBA, Professor and Chairman, Department of Health Policy, Jefferson Medical College (Philadelphia, PA). "The development of improved interventions for chronic conditions hinges on understanding their distribution within the population and the factors that influence that distribution."

"The new title of our official journal reflects the evolution of chronic disease care to strategies across the entire care continuum—from prevention and wellness to the most complex interventions, " says DMAA President and CEO Tracey Moorhead. "Our journal has evolved, too, keeping pace with these changes as the leading peer-reviewed publication for population health."
