Average success rates per cycle of IVF are 23% |
The number of women having successful IVF treatment in the UK has topped 10,000 for the first time, data shows.
There were 10,242 births resulting in 12,596 babies in 2006, a 13% rise on the number of births the year before.
Success rates per treatment started rose to 23% with every age group seeing a rise, according to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority.
In 1992, the first year the regulator started collecting data, the live birth rate was 13%.
'Commonplace'
HFEA chairman Professor Lisa Jardine said: "In the year that we celebrated the 30th anniversary of the birth of the world's first IVF baby, these latest figures show just how far we've come.
"IVF is now commonplace, with the number of treatment cycles and births rising yet again."
The figures also showed that overall the number of patients having IVF treatment rose by 7% to over 32,000.
And the number of multiple births, which the HFEA is trying to reduce because of the risk to mother and baby, fell slightly from 24% of births to 23%.
It comes as the HFEA has launched the new "Find a Clinic" website, which gives information on the centres providing fertility treatment and their success rates.
Top of the league is Mohamed Taranissi who runs the Assisted Reproduction and Gynaecology Centre (ARGC) in London which had double the average success rates for some of the age groups.
Mr Taranissi currently faces the General Medical Council (GMC) over allegations relating to the treatment of two female patients at the ARGC.
